Driving down the 5 ~ Wednesday, June 29, 2016
We make this trip a couple times a year to visit family.
Two notable things on this trip: We stopped at as produce stand in Gilroy, and bought some nuts, cherries--and ice cream flavored with Gilroy's most famous product.
Later, we stopped at Buttonwillow to trade off driving. A short line, the San Joaquin Valley Railroad, crosses under the highway here. I always see a few freight cars parked, but for the first time, we saw an actual train. I took some pictures, and the engineer waved back and honked his horn :)
A few miles farther south the 5 crosses over an even more elusive short line, the Sunset Railway; it'd be fun to catch a train there too, but I don't know if it's actually operational.
