San Juan Bautista ~ Saturday, June 01, 2019
Yesterday I went along on a field trip of Nate's class to San Juan Bautista.
The mission itself is very nice and still an active Catholic Church. In the cemetery there is a memorial to AscenciĆ³n Solorsano, the last speaker of Mutsun Ohlone.
There are quite a few other historic buildings in the town too, including a hotel once run by the Breen family, survivors of the Donner Party.
Some of these buildings are part of a state park, plenty of other old buildings are in use for normal businesses, such as a very good bakery we found.
There is, incidentally, some railroad connections to this town. A shortline once connected the SP Coast Line a few miles to the west to a quarry nearby, and there was briefly a San Juan Bautista Depot. Here's some historical information, and here's an excerpt from a historical topographical map.
